Adalaj ni vav is one of the most famous landmarks near Ahmedabad. ‘Vav’ is a Gujarati word for Adalaj Stepwell and basically means a well with steps to reach the water. These kinds of step wells were very common in the past era and were considered to be the lifeline of local villages and communities.

Gujarat is rich in heritage. Ahmedabad might as well be called as the heritage capital of Gujarat. There are many heritage sites which one can visit. These sites will give you a deep understanding of the rich past of not only Gujarat, but also India. Adalaj ni vav is one such heritage site which is a must visit if you are planning to visit Ahmedabad.

Reaching Adalaj ni vav is not very difficult. It’s only 30 Minutes (19 KM) away from Ahmedabad city and the road is quite motorable. The vav was built in the 15th century and is considered as one of the finest pieces of architecture from that era. The step wells are quite prominent in the north as well and are referred to as Baoli in North regions.

One of the main reasons to build the vav was to solve the water problems of the local residents. The vav provides easy access to the groundwater and can be utilized for drinking, bathing and washing purposes, especially in the summer season when the natural resources of water like lakes and rivers are drying up.

The Adalaj ni vav is 5 stories deep and is quite spacious. The pillars and walls in this step well are carved beautifully and give a lot of insights into the culture of yesteryears. Images of local women filling water or intricate designs of the local setup of the village are displayed beautifully in the carvings.

India is a rich and culturally diverse country. Artifacts and architectural beauty like Adalaj ni vav are found in a lot of cities. A very famous step well or baoli in Delhi is known as Ugrasen ki Baoli. That is also a similar structure as adalaj ni vav.
